Nach dem Studium Geschichte, Deutsche Philologie und P.P.P. (Philosophie, Psychologie und Pädagogik – Lehramt) an der Universität Wien (Diplom 1998, Dissertation 2002) arbeitete er als Fachreferent der „Margareta Weisser Stiftung für indigene Völker in Asien“. In langjähriger ehrenamtlicher Tätigkeit in der kirchlichen Kinder- und Jugendarbeit sowie der damit verbundenen entwicklungspolitischen Arbeit lernte er die Bedeutung von Bildung und Reflexion der Praxis kennen und schätzen.
Überlappend und anschließend koordinierte Gerald Faschingeder die Österreichischen Entwicklungstagungen (Salzburg 2001, Graz 2003, Linz 2005 und Innsbruck 2008, Krems 2011 und Salzburg 2014). 2004 bis 2009 und seit März 2020 Geschäftsführer des Mattersburger Kreises für Entwicklungspolitik an den Österreichischen Universitäten. Lehrbeauftragter am Projekt Internationale Entwicklung der Universität Wien im Bereich Kultur und Entwicklung. Seit 2004 widmet er sich als Direktor des Paulo Freire Zentrums dem Anliegen, Reflexionsräume für engagierte Menschen der (entwicklungs-)politischen Praxis zu schaffen.

After his studies of History, German Philology and Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (P.P.P. – Teaching Degree) at the University of Vienna (Diploma 1998, Dissertation 2002) he worked as consultant on the subject of “Indigenous peoples in Asia” at the “Margareta Weisser Foundation for indigenous peoples in Asia“. His long-standing experiences with voluntary child- and youth work and its aspects of development policy led him to realize the importance of education and reflection of practice.
He went on to coordinate the Austrian Conferences on Development (Salzburg 2001, Graz 2003, Linz 2005 , Innsbruck 2008, Krems 2011 and Salzburg 2014). Since 2002 he also teaches at the University of Vienna in the Studies of International Development, mainly on Culture and Development. From 2004 until 2009 he additionally operated as chief executive of the “Mattersburg Circle for development politics at the Austrian Universities”. Since 2004, as director of the Paulo Freire Center, he has been dedicating himself to the creation of space for reflection on development policy work.
